Mold or algae appears as a green substance that normally first appears on the north facing side of your homes' siding. The reason for this is because the north side is where the prevailing amount of shade and moisture are present. Algae on an asphalt shingle roof appears in the form of black streaks or stains running down the roof.
Mildew appears as small greenish black spots about an 1/8th inch in diameter. Mildew commonly exists on vinyl siding and on the bottom side of gutters and the soffit areas of your home.
The Vinyl Siding Institute (VSI) has recommendations for cleaning mold, mildew and algae from vinyl siding.
The major shingle manufacturers also have suggested cleaning solutions for removing algae from shingles without damaging them in the process. |
