Mold or algae appears as a green substance that normally first appears on the north facing side of your homes' siding. The reason for this is because the north side is where the prevailing amount of shade and moisture are present. Algae on an asphalt shingle roof appears in the form of black streaks or stains running down the roof.

Mildew appears as small greenish black spots about an 1/8th inch in diameter. Mildew commonly exists on vinyl siding and on the bottom side of gutters and the soffit areas of your home.

The Vinyl Siding Institute (VSI) has recommendations for cleaning mold, mildew and algae from vinyl siding.

The major shingle manufacturers also have suggested cleaning solutions for removing algae from shingles without damaging them in the process.

Mold can damage your home as well as your health. It can seem impossible to get rid of. I have suffered during most of my youth with congested sinuses from both the spores in the air, as well as the products which were used to mitigate them. A few years ago I traveled to visit a friend in Ireland who was experiencing an extended cold. She showed me some Colloidal Silver that her nutritionist gave her, and I tried it topically on a skin irritation. It really did the trick! I sprayed it on my face and my sinuses improved. I did further research and found that its a great cleaner. So I bought a few dark glass spray bottles and now I use the Silver on the counter tops, in the bathroom, and on my hands when they feel dirty out in public. I also spray it on my vinyl siding. I have used hydrogen peroxide as well, but worry that it will fade dark siding, so only used it on white.
