What kind of insurance do you need to start up a business like this? I'm sure there are some liability issues when you have to drag hose around and get everything all wet and risk having people slip and fall.

General liability for sure, anywhere from 1-2 million coverage. Also workmen's comp insurance which can vary depending on what services you are offering.
It can get expensive which is why a lot of guys skip out on it and offer a low price for their services. That might sound good until they screw something up and damage a homeowners house or property.
All homeowners should make sure any contractor that steps foot on their property can show proof of insurance. |

I would imagine that a good insurance is a must as it is so easy to end up in small claims court. How much would a good insurance cost if you are starting a new pressure washing business?

In my experience for full GL insurance depending on the amount of coverage and your area, on average it could run you anywhere between $500 and $2,000. That is just for GL, now factor in insurance on any work vehicles, your equipment, and comp insurance if you have employees and you'll begin to understand what it takes to run a business; it isn't cheap when done properly.

If your hiring a company to come out and do power washing is it mandatory that they disclose they have insurance? Is there any way to check this out prior to a company starting a job?

You have to take it upon yourself to ask them for proof of insurance and do not let them on your property until they have accomated your request.
