Why clean asphalt shingles?
An airborne algae known as "roof algae" can infest asphalt shingles without reason. The alga feed on the powdered limestone that is in the shingles and begins to thrive. After a few rains, the alga is spread down the roof causing unsightly black streaks.
One good reason to have your roof cleaned is obviously to remove the unsightly black stains and to boost your home's curb appeal. A good first impression on a home can add 5-10% to the value of the home.
Moreover, by not having the roof cleaned will allow the alga to lessen the longevity of the shingle roof by not allowing the shingles to reflect heat. This can cause costly premature repairs and replacements.
The major roofing manufacturers recommend low pressure methods and certain cleaners that will not cause harm to the shingle roof. These effective methods and cleaners not only removes the algae but kills it, assuring it does not return in a short while.
If you are a roof cleaning contractor, be certain to use the recommended cleaners and the low pressure methods. Never, never, never use a pressure washer on asphalt shingles, this removes the shingle granules and deteriorates the shingles.
On the other hand if you are a homeowner, be completely sure that the roof cleaning company you hire is using the methods that are suggested. |
