New Deck Stain

Hello, my wife and I had a deck built for us about 7 years ago. We are thinking about re-staining it in the next few months, and i was just wondering if you reccomended any certain type of sealer. The deck is made of pine (if that helps.) Thank you for your help.

I recommend you go to your local paint store for a good oil based deck stain. I always recommend to my customers to choose a semi-transparent penetrating oil stain that will allow the wood grain to show through, but has enough pigment to give some UV protect. The rule of thumb is, the darker the tone of stain, the more sun protection it provides. We've experienced good results with Deckscapes from Sherwin Williams or Olympic Maximum.

Just remember that the number one reason a deck stain fails is because the wood was not prepped correctly.

I had a guy wash and seal my deck a few years ago. He put some oil stuff on it that wasn't cheap. I was surprised when it started to fade only a few months later. The can said it would last 2 years. It makes sense that it was probably the prep work that was done incorrectly and not the fault of the sealer. This was a friend of a friend so unfortunately he probably didn't know any better. Wish I would have known that before. Rolling Eyes
