Hello, nice site and very helpful.

I want to know more about the brightening step in the deck refinishing process. I was told that I need to apply a brightener to my deck after I clean it. What is it, what does it do, and is it necessary?

Thanks Joe.

Joe,

The brightening process, also called neutralizing, is a necessary step in wood restoration.

Wood cleaning products are caustic substances that leave the pH level in the wood very high. A second step is necessary to neutralize this condition by lowering the pH to a more acidic level. The caustic cleaners leave the wood very dark looking after it's been cleaned. As the pH level is lowered by neutralizing, the wood also brightens, hence the term "brightening". Deck sealers will adhere better to wood in acidic conditions.

Brightening agents are mild acid solutions. There are various types that can be used. Phosphoric acid, citric acid, and oxalic acid are a few of the more common types.

Extreme caution should be taken when handling these solutions. Gloves, safety glasses, and a respirator are a must.
