Black roof streaks more commonly known as roof algae is becoming an increasing problem in many regions of the country. Shingle manufacturers are combating the problem by producing algae resistant shingles. But we have seen cases where these algae resistant shingles have been covered in roof algae so obviously the shingles are not yet effective as the shingle manufacturers would like them to be.
Something else the shingle manufacturers do to combat roof algae is to recommend chemicals and cleaning methods for algae infected shingles without causing harm to them. The method they recommend is a low pressure chemical application that kills the algae but doesn’t harm the roof.
What is not recommended is using a pressure washer to clean the algae off of your roof, doing so removes excessive amounts of shingle granules lessening the longevity of your roof. Ignoring the black roof streaks will also result in premature failure of the shingles. |
