We've all seen the yard signs or posters hanging on a telephone pole stating "House Washing $99" or some other service for an unethical price.
So what is the difference in the $99 service versus a more premium service besides the price? After all, pressure washing is easy and anyone can do it right? Wrong! Those that have hired the company advertising a ridiculously low price have more times than not had a bad taste left in their mouths afterwards.
Let's first understand why someone offers such a low price. Most serious business owners don't just jump right into something without first researching the endeavor, doing a market analysis, writing a business plan, and having or getting some business capitol. These are just the generic basics of going into business for yourself. After researching and consulting with others in the industry the serious contractor is ready to start putting his plan to action. The proper equipment is bought, the proper licensing and insurance is put in place, classes for certification may be taken to ensure proper techniques, an advertising budget is set aside, the personal finances are all in check, and money is put back for lean times. Now with all the right elements and attitude the contractor knows that its all about the customer. He is ready to provide a top quality job and excellent customer service. He knows what his numbers are and what he needs to make the company profitable enough to remain in business.
The contractor offering the unbelievable low price has not taken even half of these steps. He is the guy that maybe just lost his job or is just sick of working for someone else. Their focus is not long term its fly-by-night. They have not researched and have no business plan, and like a captain of a boat without a map, they are at the mercy of the sea. They have no idea how to sell value to the customers by offering an excellent service so they sell with a low price. Its the most common mistake new business owners are guilty of. It makes sense to think you can low-ball your competition and get all the work. Their mentality is "hey $20 an hour is better than I was making." Unfortunately they figure out it doesn't work like that and they start to become overwhelmed with all the business expenses. To combat it they are forced to cut corners on their services and that's where the home owner gets burnt. There are thousands of horror stories of unethical companies damaging home owners properties and the sad part is, it gives the whole industry a bad name.
Please be cautions of the ridiculously low price, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Working with a more qualified, professional contractor you can be sure you will get the excellent service that you expect. |

| I was just talking about that the other day, there is alot of guys around here that offer "any deck washed 99.00 and any deck sealed 299" with all the hidden upcharges at the estimate, it's a classic bait and switch coupon. Most of these types train guys for a week, dont use brighteners to stabalize the wood, dilute their sealer with mineral spirits, and spray everything including flowers, patio furniture, and houses. The only good that comes out of this is once customers use them, the next time they look for quality, and usually become loyal customers. |
