How do you market your business? Is it best to drive around a neighborhood and leave door hangers? Or do you use those weekly mailers? What works best?

Door hangers work good as well as direct mail. The key is to target your type of customers.

Are there some neighborhoods that are better than others to generate business? In my area, it's a pretty typical middle class neighborhood, but about a couple of miles away, there are some really nice homes. Which would you go for? Both?

Ideally you would want to target both and track the results. Odds are that one will out pull the other significantly.

And what about the yellow pages? I would have thought that this would give you a lot of customers? What is your experience with getting customers this way?

I do not advertise in the Yellow Pages. It may work for some but in my area it attracts too many price shoppers and I have not molded my business to accommodate those type of people. To me it is like throwing a dart at a board with your eyes closed. I've found it works best to be very specific and targeted with my advertising.

I would pay to have my name website and number in there....15 a month...That's it. With websites .....yellow pages are the old way of marketing. The only reason I would even consider paying for my name website and number would be for those older people that still do not use the Internet.

The 'older' folks tend to be on strict budgets, and even the ones that live in wealthy homes - I am shocked how penny pinching they are sometimes. So why advertize to them?

I've noticed that the older crowd that does well financially is pretty up to date with computers and Internet usage.

The more conservative folks are more prone to use the yellowpages but are on more of a fixed income and may or may not be your type of customer.

So it is a thinner crowd you are appealing to in the YP's but it really depends on your ROI. If it is bringing you a good return for $15 a month then why not? On the other hand if a huge $200 monthly ad is doing nothing then it should be revised or dropped all together. I have a honorable mention in the YP's for free and I get a handful of jobs from it each year.

I agree the YP's aren't what they used to be and are now more for Electricians, Plumbers, Wrecker services, and so on but it really all boils down to ROI and that's it.
