In unity with the directions that come with a deck cleaner, it is essential to hose down plants and shrubs in the surrounding area before applying cleaning solutions. Water can help weaken any deck cleaners that may accidentally come into contact with plants and grass. Even with mild deck cleaners, care must be taken to limit the quantity of cleaner that gets on nearby landscaping.

The wood deck cleaner can be brushed onto the deck using a broom, applied with a pump up sprayer or can be sprayed on with a pressure washer using low pressure. After allowing the cleaners to dwell, the deck should be thoroughly washed. This is the step where the correct amount of water pressure can be predominantly helpful, as water under pressure more efficiently rinses out both dirt and dead wood fibers. Moreover, too much pressure can scar and gouge wood leaving hideous wand marks that will be visible even through a wood sealer.
