At one point during the house wash we had noticed a large hornet’s nest in the overhang of the house above the garage. It was very active with hornets and needed to be brought to the attention of the homeowner. She decided it would be best to have the nest destroyed if it could be done without causing an attack, and if we were willing. I told her we were up to the challenge so she went and bought some hornet killer. We coated the nest and let it sit while we washed the rest of the house. We came back to the area of the nest and noticed there were only a few hornets flying around so we felt it safe to get up on the roof and clean up the mess. All went well and no stings were reported.

We finished up the driveway and sidewalks just before a rain shower moved in. The Warsaw homeowner was so excited to see the house and driveway clean again and to know that her gutters would flow freely and just in time. She was also very grateful for ridding the hornets nest being she has little kids and pets not to mention the awful mess it was making on the house. The bad thing about people who get burned or receive horrible services from unethical contractors sometime in the past, is that they are reluctant and very cautious about hiring again. But for us, we do not mind because it just makes our everyday job of treating people right seem that much easier. The plan was to strip all of the old solid sealer off the deck to get it back down to bare wood again. This then would be followed up with a neutralizing process to brighten the wood and to make it more acidic so the new deck stain would penetrate well.

The homeowners still wanted a red look but wanted something semi-transparent so the wood grain would  show through. We chose a sealer that is specially formulated for dense hardwoods like ipe and other exotic woods.

The trick with this ipe deck was to get all the old sealer off first so the new sealer could fully penetrate the wood. This stripping process also had to be done using fairly low pressure so the ipe would not fur up from too much water pressure. A stripping agent was applied and low pressure was used to strip/wash the ipe deck. The old product was very stubborn to come off in areas due to being over applied by the previous contractor. It was rough going and took a couple of attempts all the while we had to be careful not to harm the painted cedar screen room directly below the ipe deck.

Once the deck was stripped, it was allowed to dry out for a couple of days before we returned to apply the new deck sealer. This ipe deck was in horrible shape due to an inexperienced contractor getting in over their heads and the homeowners were only hopeful we could help. It all worked out in the end and everyone was happy.

This Goshen, IN customer’s wooden deck was in bad shape. It had two failing coats of deck stain. Apparently whomever stained it last did not take the time to properly remove the old failing deck stain that was on the wood. They simply washed the deck and then slapped a new deck stain right over the old.

At the time the new homeowners took over the deck looked good as it had just been re-stained. It did not take long though for the new deck stain to start to peel and flake. This is pretty common as deck stain is made to adhere to bare wood, not another deck stain. Whomever did the work on this deck was either cheap, uneducated, did not care, or all of the above.

Unfortunately the mess became that of the new homeowners, so they called us to come in and restore the deck. We removed two layers of deck stain using the right chemicals and low pressure so we did not fur or splinter up the soft cedar wood. The prep work came out great, the Goshen customers were a bit surprised as to how the appearance of the deck was completely restored. A couple of days later we came back to apply the new deck stain.
